Risk: Infection may be associated with gastrointestinal and respiratory disease ranging in severity. In addition, in utero infection leads to stillbirths or persistently infected (PI) calves with shortened lifespans.
Disease Transmission: PI calves shed virus constantly, effectively exposing not only animals within their own enclosures but also those in adjacent pens or pastures. If PI animals are not removed promptly, the disease can spread rapidly.
Testing: BVDV testing of all animals and then removing PI animals saves herds and reduces significant financial losses.
